Introduction
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a term for electronic products that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete, and have essentially reached the end of their useful life.
e-Waste management in India poses both challenges and opportunities. The country’s rapid technological growth has led to a significant increase in electronic waste generation, which contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment and public health. India implemented the “e-Waste (Management) Rules” in 2016 to regulate e-waste handling and disposal. However, the informal sector still plays a significant role in e-waste management due to limited formal recycling infrastructure. Efforts are underway to raise awareness, establish proper recycling facilities, and promote responsible e-waste disposal practices to mitigate the environmental and health risks associated with improper handling of electronic waste.
e-Waste management Rules published in November 2022, planned for implementation from 1st April 2023 will bring change in the way the eWaste is managed and accounted. It focus on bringing the digital approach to eWaste EPR regime and we all look forward for its implementation.
